  New Geography.

"There has been a serious, seismic chance in attitude after 9/11 in the country in its attitude about torture," Dr. Strozier said. In the minds of many Americans, he said, "it's O.K. to torture now, to get information that will save us from terrorism."
John Schwartz, New York Times.

I am very much fascinated by the hypocrisy of the general debate.

A war is always fought dirty. People die. And when people die there will be corpses, and those corpses are not bound to look pretty. People kill. And when people kill they will behave like killers, not like distinguished civilians. None of these things have to do with patriotism or love for freedom. But with war. Very much with war.

In the States everyone seems to be so shocked now that the Iraq war turns out to be just as dirty as any other war.
There were hundreds of mutililated corpses in the streets of Baghdad after the bombings, and yes, there were women and children among them. During the fights people got shot in the stomach and vomited blood on their intestines. Bullets penetrated their skull and made their brains spray against nearby walls. There were screams and tears and crazy, inhuman noises.
It all happened. You just didn't see it.

Now another popular branch of war came to the surface and everyone acts surprised. Although the torture and mistreatments appear to be less of a problem than the fact that there are pictures everyone can see. The gouvernment had put a lot of effort into their media policy, making sure that the media only showed what had been approved by the Pentagon.

It was supposed to be a clean war, no victims, only winners and freed, happy people. Sadly that's just not how it is.
