"The newspaper is the man's soap opera."

Why do we cling to democracy? The system is easily corrupted. Masses are seldom a reliable source of wisdom and rightousness. Giving them the power to rule does not sound like a very bright idea. People in higher positions - gouvernment, jurisdiction, police - make mistakes, sometimes intentionally, because they are human. All these are signs of imperfection. And the outcome can be disastrous.

Democracy is not always the perfect solution for every problem. Occasionally it can be witnessed how it makes things even worse. It takes its time, and there is no optimal method. Democracy itself does neither respect minorities, nor does it protect outsiders. And a many great thinkers were ultimately against the installment of democracy.

At this point there are not a lot of idealistic reasons left. Only a pragmatic one: it works.

  A new Satan.

We should be careful how we judge others. Not so much because we might be wrong but because our judgement could have metamorphic results. In our eyes rests the power to bend reality. And seeing someone foreign, can make that person appear like a stranger. Defining the truth of things is our responsibility and curse.

Calling someone Satan might not have the effect we intended, if there was intention behind it at all. Telling someone that he is evil could very well ignite a new shadow in his soul. Maybe he will begin to regard himself as that, and even find ways to convince himself of it. Once convinced, the path is set.

We can easily turn people into monsters by telling them that they are monsters. If course it depends on the strength of someone's character but ultimately that person will accept his role. And become a monster.

There is a simple principle behind it: if you cannot fight for good, fight for evil. The armies of hell are thus supported by our own ignorance.

It is important to note that the certainty of a role in life can be a very soothing experience. Knowing where you belong, which side you are on, is a defining momentum. Even if it is the side of the adversary.

From the archives of medical tautology:
"Patients with complete remission have a good prognosis."
Ah. I knew it.

  The Post-Reason Age.

On the third day God turned the world into a mushroom. After a few hours he thought better of it and went back to day one. It is a definite attribute of evolution that we will never find out how many attempts it took to produce this result.
