  Papa Ratzi & beyond.

So it happened. We have a German Pope. Cardinal Ratzinger, formerly archbishop of Munich and Freising, will take over this 2000 year old institution.

Here's the good news: nothing is going to happen. Here's the bad news: nothing is going to change.

In fact, Ratzinger has been something like a "shadow pope" for the last 15 years anyway. Most memos and declarations were his doing, with Wojtyla's signature at the bottom. Now it's merely been made official. His course is the church's course of the last decade. I doubt that there will be many surprises.

Make no mistake, he's a smart man. Only on the wrong side. Maybe his new position will give him a different perspective of the world and its theological needs. Maybe he will be the reformer everyone's been waiting for. We can still hope.

In the meantime though we should prepare for another decade of standstills.  12:27
